School improvement

Many schools in the Mtwara region of Tanzania lack the resources students need to succeed. Health problems, clean water issues and a general shortage of textbooks inhibit schools from providing quality education. Jiamini works to address these issues through our School Improvement Programs.

Projects

Health and Wellness: We work with schools on the twin goals of preventing malaria and providing students with clean water. In many areas poor water conditions lead to water-borne diseases and contribute to populations of malaria carrying mosquitoes. Poor health can cripple a student’s education with missed days of school and diminished learning capacity. To combat these issues we help schools install mosquito nets, drain standing water, clean their wells and install pumps to avoid contamination of water catchments.

Textbooks: Few students have their own textbooks and schools often do not have enough books for students to appropriately share. Our solution is to provide primary and secondary schools with class sets of textbooks in core subjects. All books are sourced in Tanzania to provide the added benefit of contributing to the local economy.

Tutoring and Test Preparation: Working through local teachers, we provide after school tutoring for children in core subjects, including English, Science, and Math.

Our Approach

We understand that no one solution will fully resolve the aforementioned problems. Our approach to school improvement emphasizes working with head masters, teachers and students to find unique solutions that work for their specific communities. Working with schools allows us to increase both the health and academic resources available to the students in lasting ways most appropriate for each school.

School Improvement Programs are funded through individual donations and the purchase of Gift Kits.
