Sponsorship

In Tanzania, the fees associated with attending secondary school – tuition, uniforms, etc – make it impossible for many orphaned and vulnerable children to complete their basic education. The Jiamini Scholarship Fund was founded to help gifted students overcome these financial hurdles by pairing them with sponsors.

Without a secondary school education a young person in Tanzania stands little chance of ever being fully employed. Completing secondary school gives young people the opportunity to continue on to university, find work as teachers, police, military or complete vocational training. Having educated youth will also contribute to the economic development of Tanzania.

The Process

All the students in the Jiamini Scholarship program attend primary school in the town of Newala, located in southern Tanzania. Each year we work with local teachers, headmasters and community leaders to identify students in their final year of primary school who are at the top of their class, but have no way to pay their school fees.

In their first year with Jiamini, Scholars receive additional English and core subject tutoring in preparation for the mandatory secondary school entrance exams. As they enter secondary school, we pair each Scholar with a Sponsor. Our goal is for each of our Scholars to be accepted into a local government boarding school, which offer stability, reliable room and board and time to study – luxuries that most of our students have never had.

The Commitment

Jiamini Sponsors make a four-year commitment to fund their student’s secondary school education. During this time we encourage Scholars and Sponsors to form relationships through letter writing.

Each year, the Jiamini Team visits every student at his or her school. We speak with his/her teachers and head master in order to make sure each student is progressing well. No donation money is ever used for Jiamini Team travels.
